One out of every three adult Americans lives with at least one ongoing invisible illness
The invisible illness community is the largest minority in the world. Yet, instead of feeling inclusive and wrapped in camaraderie, most of us feel alone, less valued, and unworthy. No more!
Invisible Warriors supports and advocates for women with:
- autoimmune disorders
- ongoing invisible illnesses
- women vets with PTSD/MST
Women with ongoing invisible illnesses too often lose their jobs, their income, and their insurance because their illnesses force changes in their lives that they didn’t expect and that others don’t see or understand. Their spouse often leaves, depression sets in, and 7 out of 10 attempt suicide.
Invisible Warriors is here to change that cycle.
Five Stages
Invisible illnesses are among the least-understood medical conditions in the world. They are not only diseases, but they can also be dis-abling which makes them a disability, often one that cannot be seen. That means people don’t always believe us when we tell them we’re not well because we LOOK fine.
We women with these challenges find ourselves going through these five stages:
- First, we feel denial. I’m not going to be like this forever. I can get over this.
- Then it’s despair. My life is over. I’m worthless, helpless, valueless. You may lose or leave your job and stop leaving the house at this stage.
- After that, you may feel anger and frustration as you try to get help and have to fight medical professionals to get them to believe you and help you.
- Then you begin to accept the bad, that you are not ever going to be any better. Depression can set in.
- Finally, and hopefully, you make the decision to thrive, living life differently at whatever level you can.
We can move between the stages and often feel alone. But you AREN’T alone. There are many Invisible Warriors, and we’re here to help you move from surviving to thriving. You don’t have to do this alone. You can live a full life within the scope of your new capabilities.
Just knowing the simple fact that we are not alone and that we all still have so much to offer can be life-changing. Join us!
